Plain Language Explanation: For most of Earth's history, life was microscopic. Earth formed more than 4.5 billion years ago, while some of the oldest widely discussed chemical evidence for life occurs in rocks about 3.7 billion years old. Stromatolite structures provide evidence of microbial communities by about 3.5 billion years ago. Much later, photosynthetic microbes helped transform Earth's atmosphere through the accumulation of oxygen, opening new evolutionary possibilities.

Evidence: Carbon chemistry in approximately 3.7-billion-year-old rocks has been interpreted as evidence of biological activity.; Layered stromatolites approximately 3.5 billion years old record microbial sediment-trapping communities.; Banded iron formations and other geochemical signals record major changes in oxygen availability.

Examples From Collection: Grypania sp.; Conophyton sp.; The Room 1 microbial specimens provide a bridge from chemical and geological evidence to recognizable fossils.

Common Misconception: Life did not begin with dinosaurs, animals or even plants. Microbial life dominated Earth for billions of years.

What Scientists Still Debate: The exact time, place and chemical pathway by which life first originated remain unresolved. Very ancient possible biosignatures require especially careful testing because non-biological geological processes can imitate some signals.
