Plain Language Explanation: After the Cambrian diversification, marine life underwent another major expansion during the Ordovician. This later event is commonly called the Great Ordovician Biodiversification Event. Existing animal groups expanded into many more species, ecological roles and communities. Brachiopods, bryozoans, mollusks, echinoderms, trilobites and other marine groups diversified across extensive shallow seas.

Evidence: Ordovician fossil assemblages contain greatly increased marine taxonomic and ecological diversity compared with earlier assemblages.; National Park Service summaries describe marine fauna increasing approximately fourfold during the Ordovician.; Smithsonian summaries likewise describe a major Ordovician increase in ocean biodiversity.
