Plain Language Explanation: During the Cambrian, marine ecosystems became much more diverse and structurally complex. Many major animal groups appear abundantly in the fossil record, including arthropods, mollusks, echinoderms and early vertebrate relatives. Predation, burrowing, defensive armor, shells, spines and new feeding strategies transformed both animals and the seafloor environments they inhabited.
Evidence: Cambrian deposits preserve many animal body plans that were rare or unknown in older rocks.; Exceptional deposits such as the Burgess Shale preserve soft-bodied animals that ordinary fossilization would miss.; Trace fossils record increasing disturbance and engineering of the seafloor by mobile animals.
Examples From Collection: Waptia fieldensis; Wiwaxia corrugata; Ctenocystis utahensis; Archaeocyathus sp.
Common Misconception: The word 'explosion' does not mean everything appeared in a single generation. The diversification unfolded over millions of years, which is rapid on a geological timescale.
What Scientists Still Debate: No single cause explains the Cambrian diversification. Researchers study interactions among oxygen levels, ecology, developmental genetics, environmental conditions, predation and preservation bias.
