Plain Language Explanation: Jurassic herbivores used more than one defense. Large body size could discourage attack, while some dinosaurs evolved specialized weapons and armor. Stegosaurus possessed paired tail spikes capable of inflicting serious injury. Its famous back plates were important structures too, but their exact functions remain less certain.

Evidence: Stegosaurus fossils preserve large tail spikes.; Published Allosaurus injuries have been interpreted as consistent with trauma from Stegosaurus tail spikes.; Healed injuries can demonstrate that an aggressive encounter occurred and that the injured animal survived.
