Plain Language Explanation: Birds did not merely descend from dinosaurs in the sense that dinosaurs vanished and birds replaced them. Birds are living theropod dinosaurs. Fossils preserve the gradual assembly of bird features within small theropod lineages: feathers existed before powered flight, and features such as wishbones, hollow bones, specialized wrists and feathered forelimbs evolved in a branching sequence.

Evidence: Non-avian theropod fossils preserve feathers.; Archaeopteryx combines flight feathers with teeth, a long bony tail and other theropod skeletal traits.; Comparative skeletal anatomy places birds within Theropoda.; Cretaceous bird fossils document multiple early avian lineages with combinations of teeth, claws, feathers and beaks.

Examples From Collection: Sinosauropteryx prima; Caudipteryx zoui; Archaeopteryx lithographica; Confuciusornis dui; Hesperornis regalis

Taxonomy Guard: Sinosauropteryx prima and Caudipteryx zoui are treated as feathered non-avian theropod dinosaurs, not as modern-type birds.

Common Misconception: Pterosaurs are not birds and are not dinosaurs. They are a separate flying-reptile lineage. Birds belong inside Dinosauria.

What Scientists Still Debate: The dinosaur origin of birds is strongly established. Researchers continue to refine the exact branching order of early avialans and closely related theropods and how powered flight itself evolved.

Enrichment Method: SAGE original interpretive concept; Cretaceous ecosystems kept geographically and chronologically distinct; direct feeding evidence separated from functional inference; bird-dinosaur relationship represented phylogenetically
