Plain Language Explanation: Mass extinction removed many dominant lineages but did not erase life. Birds survived while all other dinosaur lineages disappeared. Mammals, turtles, crocodilian relatives, amphibians and many other organisms also crossed the boundary. Over the following millions of years, surviving lineages diversified into reorganized ecosystems and newly available ecological roles.
Evidence: Bird fossils occur after the K-Pg boundary, demonstrating survival of one dinosaur lineage.; Non-avian dinosaur fossils do not persist into confirmed Paleogene assemblages.; Mammal fossil diversity expands substantially during the early Cenozoic.; Recovery patterns differ among terrestrial and marine groups.
