Plain Language Explanation: The impact produced immediate regional devastation and injected enormous quantities of material into the atmosphere. Dust, soot and sulfur-bearing aerosols could sharply reduce sunlight and disrupt photosynthesis. The broad conclusion that sunlight and climate were severely disturbed is strongly supported, but the exact intensity, geographic pattern and duration of darkness and cooling come partly from physical and atmospheric models.

Evidence: K-Pg boundary deposits preserve ejecta and impact-derived material.; Soot occurs in boundary deposits and provides evidence of widespread combustion.; Impact and atmospheric models show that dust and sulfate aerosols could greatly reduce incoming sunlight.; Reduced sunlight would directly threaten photosynthetic food webs.

Examples From Collection: Room 08 plant and herbivore fossils illustrate organisms whose food webs depended on primary production immediately before the boundary.

Common Misconception: Scientists did not directly observe a specific number of dark days or a single exact global temperature drop. Those numerical details are reconstructed with models constrained by geological evidence.

What Scientists Still Debate: The amount, composition and atmospheric lifetime of impact dust, soot and sulfur aerosols remain subjects of quantitative research, as does the geographic extent of some immediate effects.
