Plain Language Explanation: Immediately before the end-Cretaceous extinction, Earth supported complex ecosystems on land and in the sea. In western North America, the latest Hell Creek communities included non-avian dinosaurs, mammals, turtles, crocodilian relatives, snakes, fishes, insects and diverse plants. These organisms were living in functioning ecosystems before a sudden global disturbance transformed the conditions under which they survived.

Evidence: Latest-Cretaceous fossil assemblages document diverse ecosystems immediately below the K-Pg boundary.; Hell Creek plant fossils show established vegetation before the extinction.; Non-avian dinosaurs occur up to the latest Cretaceous record and disappear at the boundary.

Examples From Collection: Room 08: Tyrannosaurus rex and Triceratops horridus represent part of the latest-Cretaceous terrestrial fauna.; Room 08: Edmontosaurus annectens, Thescelosaurus neglectus, Didelphodon vorax, turtles, snakes and plant fossils broaden the ecosystem beyond the two flagship dinosaurs.

Common Misconception: The end-Cretaceous world was not already empty or reduced to only a few dying dinosaur species. Diverse ecosystems existed immediately before the extinction.

What Scientists Still Debate: Researchers continue examining regional ecological trends during the final part of the Cretaceous and whether some groups were changing before the impact. Those questions are separate from the evidence for the abrupt boundary crisis.
